You too can contribute to building a new Kosciuszko Museum!

Do you keep memorabilia connected to Tadeusz Kosciuszko? Postcards, stamps, prints dating back to the times of the Commander-in-Chief? Items that have been passed from generation to generation in your family? Now these items may become a part of a new Kosciuszko Museum in Krakow. The Kosciuszko Mound Committee has launched a general collection of memorabilia that will be exhibited.

When, in 1820, a decision was made to build the Kosciuszko Mound, everyone wanted to help. For the next three years, almost every resident and visitor to Krakow contributed to this project – not only Poles and veterans but also foreign tourists. Another opportunity is now open to leave something valuable for future generations. The Kosciuszko Mound Committee has launched a general collection of memorabilia connected to Thaddeus Kosciuszko.

‘We are looking not only for documents, leaflets form the days of the Insurrection, but also medals, officers’ patents awarded by the Commander-in-Chief and smaller items such as postcards or stamps. Original items are the most valuable from our perspective, but we take into consideration scanning them and incorporating copies into the exhibition,” explains Mieczysław Rokosz, President of the Kosciuszko Mound Committee in Krakow. “I would like to encourage everyone who is in possession of such memorabilia. Together, we can create a really spectacular places to commemorate Thaddeus Kosciuszko and his great endeavours even better. The more memorabilia we collect, the more interesting the new museum will be,” the President concludes.

Despite the fact that the collection has just started, the Kosciuszko Mound Committee has already been given the first memorabilia. Urszula Ormicka, a Krakow-based tourist guide, presented us with a collection of stamps and postcards with portraits of Thaddeus Kosciuszko.

“I’ve been interested in stamps since I was a little girl. My uncle passed this hobby on to me. I still remember the awe his collection of postcards and stamps evoked in me! He gave some part of it to me later on – and I have just presented the oldest of them to the future Kosciuszko Museum,” Urszula Ormicka explains, and adds “The ability to support this projects is a great honour. I have a lot of endearing childhood memories connected with the Kosciuszko Mound. I would walk up here with my late grandfather. The Mound still has a special place in my heart, so I often take my friends and tourists here. I’m glad I could contribute to the formation of the Museum’s collection, even if this is such a small contribution.”

Everyone who is in possession of memorabilia connected to the Commander-in-Chief or the era of the Kosciuszko Insurrection may contact the Committee by phone at 012 425-11-16, by e-mail (info@kopieckosciuszki.pl) or via our Facebook Fan Page.
